CONTEXT AND MAIN ISSUES

Seaweed farming is an agricultural technique that, when practiced by small-scale farmers, enhances the ecosystem services provided by marine life: carbon sinks, deacidification, depollution, economic development, etc.

On Brazil’s northeastern coasts, this approach helps to regenerate marine ecosystems, creating economic value while preserving traditional know-how and avoiding the switch to high-impact fishing methods.

Structuring an artisanal seaweed production chain to regenerate ecosystems and coastal socio-economic activity.

METHOD

The project aims to structure an artisanal seaweed production chain in a coastal marine reserve in northeastern Brazil, benefiting 650 families and thus avoiding rural exodus and the switch to impact fishing methods.

This multi-disciplinary approach combines traditional algaculture techniques with biotechnological innovations to create an integrated and balanced system with the marine environment.
