Building a novel Franco-Vietnamese model to understand estuarine ecosystem services and their resilience to anthropogenic pressures
THE PROJECT PLUME
CONTEXT AND MAIN ISSUES
In estuaries, freshwater from rivers meets saltwater from the ocean. Populations are highly dependent on the ecosystem services provided by the specific biodiversity that thrives there, and which underpins local food supplies and the local economy.
In Vietnam, these estuaries are under increasing pressure from human activities and the pollutants carried by rivers, particularly during monsoon periods.
GOALS
Quantifying pollutant, water and sediment flows in the river plumes of 3 estuaries in Vietnam and their socio-ecological impacts.
METHOD
Researchers working on the Plume project are taking a multidisciplinary approach, combining the quantification of pollutant flows with socio-ecological studies aimed at understanding the impact of these pollutants on estuarine ecosystems and the humans who depend on them.
This methodology will include in-depth analyses of river plumes in three Vietnamese estuaries, as well as an assessment of their impact on local populations and marine resources.
HOW IS THIS PROJECT INNOVATIVE?
Plume stands out for its interdisciplinary approach to studying pollutant flows in Vietnamese estuaries and their socio-ecological impacts. By combining environmental science with community collaboration, this project aims to inform marine conservation policies.
Pure Ocean supports Plume’s commitment to understanding and protecting vulnerable coastal ecosystems.
