Fête de la Science 2024: Spotlight on the ocean!
Fête de la Science 2024: Spotlight on the ocean!
From 4 to 14 October, the Fête de la Science brings together the general public to celebrate scientific discoveries and advances. Initiated by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, this edition puts the ocean at the centre of attention with the theme ‘An ocean of knowledge’. 🔬
To mark the occasion, the Living Colors for Pure Ocean exhibition will be at Université de la Sorbonne in Paris from 11 to 13 October. Produced in collaboration with photographer Christophe Chellaperman and Pure Ocean, this exhibition, which opened at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi last June, celebrates the spellbinding beauty of the ocean’s biodiversity. 🪸

What are you going to do for the ocean this year?
What are you going to do for the ocean this year?
2025 will be the year of the ocean! So why not start now? Last Thursday, we got the ball rolling with our sponsors at our back-to-school breakfast at the Cercle des nageurs.
After Charlie presented our 2024 projects, we discussed the crucial issues involved in preserving the ocean. Could your company make a positive contribution to protecting the ocean in ways you’d never imagined? How can your company minimise this impact? The challenges are many, and the health of the ocean is everyone’s responsibility. Every manager can make a real difference!
A big thank you to everyone for your enthusiasm, your ideas and your pertinent questions, which demonstrate a shared desire to make a difference.
📢 Join us and be part of those who, today, are taking decisions to preserve the ocean of tomorrow!
📅 Next event: the Ocean Impact Forum on Thursday 17 October at Club 29 in Marseille. Mark your calendars and get ready to take action!

Proud of our ambassadors 💙 Meet Clara & Manon, a duo of young top-level sailors
In 2020, strengthened by over 10 years of friendship, at just 20 years of age, they decided to set up an ambitious sporting project.
🌟 Very quickly, the chemistry between the two sailors was revealed, and the results followed! In 2023 they were crowned 49erFX Junior World Champions in Germany.
🎓 But that’s not all, our sportswomen are also students: Manon is studying at Paris-Dauphine University, while Clara-Sofia is in physiotherapy school.
🌊 Their favorite playground? The ocean, of course. Today, Manon and Clara have decided to get involved in this cause that’s close to their hearts, because it’s necessary to act, and all together, we can change things.
🎯 News of their latest challenge: Manon and Clara finished 7th at the 2024 World Championships. Well done girls, we’re proud of you! 🌊
🌟 Thank you for your unwavering commitment and support, Manon and Clara!
European Sustainable Development Week starts in 15 days 📣 It’s not too late to take up the Blue Drop Enterprise Challenge!
European Sustainable Development Week starts in 15 days!
📣 It’s not too late to take on the Goutte Bleue Enterprise Challenge! 🌍
From September 18 to October 8, join the movement with Pure Ocean and get your teams involved in the “La Goutte Bleue” Corporate Challenge. Together, let’s make a simple and powerful gesture for the ocean: let’s pick up litter abandoned in nature before it reaches our blue lung. 🌊
💧 La Goutte Bleue is much more than a bag: it’s a symbol of your commitment to the planet! Each bag purchased funds ocean research and strengthens the cohesion of your teams around a concrete and positive action.
In 2023, thanks to your mobilization, 44,550 liters of waste were collected. This year, let’s do even better! 💪
You have 15 days to get ready and make a difference! For more information on how to get involved, visit our website: https://www.pure-ocean.org/la-goutte-bleue-sac-algues-dechets-nature/

Pure Ocean 2025 Call for Projects - It's On! 🌍
Are you a university, research institute, or NGO committed to ocean protection? 🙌 Pure Ocean is launching its 2025 Call for Projects to support innovative research projects that will make a difference!
Since its creation, Pure Ocean has supported 28 scientific projects aligned with 4 key strategic areas, the Pure Ocean Challenges, inspired by the United Nations 10 Ocean Decade Challenges :
🟠 Understanding marine pollution and combating its origins
🟢 Protecting biodiversity and restoring degraded marine ecosystems
🟡 Strengthening the resilience of marine ecosystems and the people who depend on them in the face of climate change
🔵 Improving our knowledge of the ocean-system
This year, special attention will be given to projects:
🤝 Developing marine conservation initiatives managed by local communities and indigenous peoples
🌱 Exploring nature-based solutions for the preservation of blue carbon ecosystems
🗺️ Operating in key oceanic areas : the French littoral, Middle East/Asia and Africa coasts
📅 Timeline:
- Phase 1: September 1 – October 1, 2024
- Phase 2: October 15 – November 15, 2024

🔥 Have you been hot this summer? So has the Mediterranean!
This summer will be BLUE
This summer, our precious Mediterranean Sea once again experienced a severe marine heatwave, with water temperatures locally exceeding 30 degrees. These heat waves, comparable to underwater fires, are endangering biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems, with dramatic consequences for marine fauna and flora, especially gorgonians.
🪸 What are gorgonians? These soft corals play a vital role in marine ecosystems, providing habitat and refuge for a multitude of species of fish, crustaceans and other marine organisms. These colonies of invertebrate animals are highly sensitive to rising water temperatures and marine heatwaves, which lead to their mass mortalities, thus weakening all the species that depend on them.
💡 In the face of this emergency, Pure Ocean supports the BUFFER scientific project. Led by the CIIMAR, MARBEC, and the MIO, this pioneering project focuses on studying the genetics of red gorgonians resistant to marine heatwaves, to understand the mechanisms of their survival. This knowledge will be used to develop appropriate management and conservation tools, particularly for the Parc National des Calanques, and to apply them to other regions of the Mediterranean.
Thanks to your support, we can contribute to the search for solutions to protect the Mediterranean and its precious ecosystems.

Latest news from the PANTHER project: your support in action!
Latest news from the PANTHER project: your support in action!
Thanks to your donations, the PANTHER (Pantelleria Benthic Habitat Recovery) project is making great strides! 🌊
🔬 Project background
PANTHER aims to establish a pilot model of technical and economic transition for the Mediterranean island of Pantelleria, restoring degraded coastal habitats. The island’s fishermen are facing declining fishing yields. The cause? The combined pressures of destructive large-scale industrial fishing and climate change.
Restoring key habitats has become necessary to preserve marine biodiversity and the food security of local populations.
📋 Latest advances
After months of preparation, the PANTHER project has officially begun!
🤝 Local collaboration: Unprecedented collaboration between fishermen, researchers and ecologists has enabled the first restoration actions to be launched. The PANTHER team successfully introduced the first rock gabions for Posidonia oceanica implantations, with the help of YAM SUB and Green Divers Pantelleria.
🌱 First transplants: The first cycle of gorgonian (Eunicella singularis) transplants has been completed. 3D photogrammetry was used for pre-transplant monitoring, enabling progress to be visualized in real time.
🪝 Strengthening partnerships: The project strengthened its collaboration with Capitaneria di Porto, the administrators of Pantelleria municipality and other local institutions. Interviews with team members and local fishermen were conducted to gather local ecological knowledge.
🌏 Awareness-raising: PANTHER project flyers were distributed to fishmongers on the island and in other spaces frequented by citizens to inform residents of the actions underway. An online questionnaire was circulated to gather islanders’ perceptions of the marine environment.
🗣️ Local testimonials: The team also visited Aldo, a former local fisherman, who shared the history of Pantelleria’s sea and the art of braiding traps.
See you soon to follow their next adventures and discover how your support continues to make a difference. 🌟
