Saviez-vous que plus de la moitié des microplastiques dans l’océan proviennent… des pneus de nos véhicules ?

Vous changez régulièrement les pneus de votre voiture, car il s’usent avec le temps. Mais vous êtes-vous déjà demandé où termine la matière manquante ? Ces fragments, invisibles à l’œil nu, ne sont pas qu’un simple résidu d’usure inerte. Ils libèrent un cocktail toxique de produits chimiques, de métaux lourds et de particules ultrafines qui polluent les sols et les fleuves, pénètrent les chaînes alimentaires marines, et finalement, notre propre organisme. En contaminant la biodiversité marine, ces particules fragilisent la santé de l’océan, ayant des répercussions directes sur la santé humaine.

📉 Une récente étude de l’université de Yale a révélé les dangers du 6PPD-quinone, un composant toxique utilisé comme additif industriel dans la fabrication des pneus. Il traverse les tissus pulmonaires, atteint la circulation sanguine, et peut franchir la barrière hémato-encéphalique, augmentant les risques de maladies respiratoires, cardiaques et neurologiques. Ce poison invisible s’accumule dans l’Océan et affecte la biodiversité marine, de la plus petite créature jusqu’aux grands prédateurs — et par ricochet, nous.

Chez Pure Ocean, nous soutenons des projets scientifiques comme SynSen, qui explore les effets de l’omniprésence des microplastiques sur la régulation de l’ADN des oiseaux marins, et l’accélération de leur vieillissement cellulaire. Ces recherches éclairent les liens profonds entre la santé de l’océan et celle de l’humanité, et rappellent qu’un océan en bonne santé est essentiel à notre survie. 

Il est urgent d’agir ! ⏳ En limitant notre consommation de plastique jetable et l’usage de la voiture individuelle, en innovant dans la conception de matériaux moins nocifs, et en soutenant des initiatives de recherche, nous pouvons réduire l’impact des microplastiques sur notre planète.

PROJECT NEWS ✨ Yaf Keru Impacts: a year rich in progress for the restoration of degraded coral reefs in Indonesia!

Thanks to your support, the Yaf Keru Impacts project, led by Mickael Racine and the Planète Mer association, is making remarkable progress in Raja Ampat. 🐠

➡️ Their aim? To show that restoration can restore coral cover and an abundance and diversity of fish.

🔬 3 contexts, 3 different situations to measure the impact of restoration

The project is based on a comparison of 3 conditions at key sites:

A context degraded by dynamite fishing
An intact context
A selection of reefs at different stages of restoration
👉 Highlights of this first year :

Data collection: Rigorous monitoring (growth measurement and counting) along standardised dive routes, repeated several times to observe the evolution of the sites over time.
Essential collaboration with local communities: Partnership with local researchers and members of the local community to ensure the sustainability and co-construction of the project with citizens.
Analysis of results: The initial results are very promising. As early as 6 months ago, we saw a significant return of coral and fish, proving the direct link between the ecological state of the reefs and the abundance of fish.
Disseminating the results: Fête de la science, seminars, and the creation of a science popularisation kit to make these advances accessible to everyone.

This project does more than just restore coral reefs: it supports local communities by guaranteeing them food security and economic prosperity.

After a year of European collaboration as part of the SOS – Sharing Ocean Science project, our report has finally been validated ➡️ the opportunity to celebrate the end of this great adventure! 🙌

Relive with us the Ocean Impact Forum, the key event that marked the conclusion of this unique collaboration between businesses, scientists and NGOs. A high point for sharing ideas, innovations and solutions for preserving our Ocean. 💡

Our aim with this project? To encourage dialogue between the worlds of business and science to transform practices towards a sustainable model. Using collective intelligence and collaborative workshops, we co-created concrete solutions to meet the challenges facing the Ocean, from plastic pollution to overfishing and climate disruption.

👉 At Pure Ocean, we’re proud to have facilitated this meeting between two often separate worlds. It is by working hand in hand that we will build a more respectful and sustainable future for our ocean.

Thanks to your support, significant advances have been made by the Regen Ocean Farms project, on the coastlines of north-east Brazil.

🔬 Researchers at the service of the ecosystem:

In September, scientists Dr. Mutue T. Fujii and Dr. Nair S. Yokoya, from the São Paulo Environmental Research Institute, visited the Corumbau marine protected area (Resex Corumbau). They trained artisanal fishermen in the taxonomic identification of algae and in ecological monitoring methodologies. These tools will enable sustainable exploitation of algal resources, while increasing the services provided by marine ecosystems. 

🤝 A local dynamic at the heart of the project:

Ten fishing families are currently involved in growing Hypnea pseudomusciformis, a seaweed with remarkable ecological and biotechnological properties. It is a seaweed rich in active molecules for human and animal health and nutrition, with antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. This activity supports the local economy while reinforcing traditional fishing practices with low environmental impact.

🎯 A project with multiple objectives :

Regen Ocean Farms aims to structure a small-scale seaweed farming industry to restore coastal ecosystems, support local economic development and help combat climate change and plastic pollution.

It’s snowing in the ocean too!

It's snowing in the ocean too! Have you heard of marine snow?

No icy flakes underwater, but an equally magical phenomenon! Marine snow is a ballet of tiny particles formed from the remains of organisms and excrement, in which bacteria and plankton thrive. It’s a veritable microscopic world that comes together to form millimetre-sized flakes… which fall inexorably towards the abyss. A real feast for the inhabitants of the deep! 🐟

👉 Plant plankton is at the heart of this cycle: it captures CO₂ at the surface and, once dead, forms a large part of this ‘snow’. The undigested organic matter during its fall finally joins the sediments of the seabed, storing carbon for millions of years. Oceanic plankton is thus at the heart of the regulation of the world’s atmospheric climate. This phenomenon helps to absorb almost 30% of man-made carbon dioxide emissions!

🔴 But our activities are threatening this natural cycle.

Direct overfishing of planktonic species, particularly krill for its oil, is drastically reducing the quantities of plankton. Marine pollution, such as plastics and heavy metals, further complicates the situation. These pollutants reduce the size of plankton and impair their ability to carry out their vital functions, thereby affecting the ocean’s carbon cycle.

🌡️Global warming is also jeopardising this vital mechanism. Changes in plankton populations caused by rising temperatures are altering the diversity of plankton, potentially disrupting the formation of marine snow, reducing its effectiveness in feeding the deep sea and storing carbon.

🎄 In this festive season, let’s think about preserving this incredible underwater world, the guarantor of our climate balance. 💙
