Discover our 2024 projects ➡️ Antarctic Biolum
Imagine, at a depth of 3,000 meters, in total darkness, hidden marine species never before discovered… After all, we only know 10% of all marine species!
This is alarming, because without knowledge, it’s difficult to protect them effectively. Yet these ecosystems are threatened by global warming and seabed mining.
❓ Why is this so crucial? Each species plays an essential role in the delicate balance of our ecosystems. Like perfectly adjusted gears, if one of them were to disappear, it would cause a catastrophic domino effect, disrupting the entire ecosystem. By protecting marine biodiversity, we preserve the ecosystem services it provides, such as climate regulation, oxygen production and so on.
🔍 How can we discover and protect new, hitherto unknown species? Did you know that 76% of deep-sea species are bioluminescent, using this ability to attract mates, hunt or defend themselves? That’s where the Antarctic Biolum project comes in!
✨ This revolutionary project will use bioluminescence to attract species in a non-intrusive way, paving the way for exciting new discoveries!

Cap Martinique: Ludovic Gérard finishes first solo after 21 days at sea!
Cap Martinique: Ludovic Gérard finishes first solo after 21 days at sea!
Despite stiff competition, Ludovic was the first in the solo category to cross the finish line in Fort-de-France after 21 days, 14 hours, 15 minutes and 8 seconds of thrilling racing aboard Solenn for Pure Ocean, a JPK 10.80. We’ll have to wait for the compensated time results to get the final rankings.
This triumph follows his previous success in the category with his partner Nicolas Brossay in 2022.
Wearing Pure Ocean’s colors loud and clear, Ludovic broke the previous edition’s record by raising even more funds for the scientific projects we support, with over €7,000 raised! THANK YOU

A few words from Ludovic on his arrival: “It’s a big challenge. There’s an extra step between double-handed and solo sailing. I’m not a solo sailor at heart. I had three objectives for this race. I wanted to finish it for myself, to achieve this challenge at 52. Secondly, I wanted to finish in the top 5, and that’s done. The third challenge was to make some noise and publicize Pure Ocean to raise money. The kitty worked well, thanks to my wife. I’m very happy to have arrived tonight.”
👏 Bravo Ludo, the whole team is very proud of you! What a pleasure to follow this race and vibrate following your exploits!

Australia experiences its worst bleaching episode in human history
Australia experiences its worst bleaching episode in human history
75% of the Great Barrier Reef is in danger. According to recent reports, 40% of this natural wonder is in an “extreme” state due to warm surface waters. Global warming continues to affect our marine ecosystem, now affecting 450 species of coral, including those that had previously resisted.
Back in March, we reported on a major bleaching episode. These phenomena are only repeating themselves. The Great Barrier Reef is home to over 1/4 of marine biodiversity, directly threatened by its loss.
🔬 Scientists have solutions. Among the projects supported thanks to your donations, let’s highlight two incredible innovations dedicated to coral preservation:
🔹 The Yaf Keru project will scientifically monitor the environmental, economic and social impacts of coral reef restoration.
🔹 The Reef Reborn team has developed a lipid cocktail to boost coral larvae and optimize their chances of survival at the most crucial time in their development. A project on the Great Barrier Reef with spectacular results!
⚠️ These programs explore innovative reef restoration techniques, but without action on our part, rising water temperatures will continue to weaken them.
Faced with this crisis, there is only one solution: limit our greenhouse gas emissions. It’s our responsibility to protect our blue planet.

Negotiations for a future without plastic pollution are underway at INC4 in Canada!

Second step in Rome for our European project!
Second step in Rome for our European project!
The “Sharing Ocean science for Sustainable business” project, coordinated by Pure Ocean, brings together numerous international partners from the worlds of scientific research and business. To stimulate innovation and collective intelligence, the group follows a proven creative approach: design thinking. This method punctuates our project with moments of remote work, and face-to-face reunions.
💭 After the problem definition stage in Marseille, it was the turn of the University of Rome-La Sapienza to welcome us for the ideation phase, a stage that involves formulating and bringing together the diversity of ideas and points of view in order to respond to the problem. As a reminder, the aim of the SOS project is to create lasting bridges between science and business, in order to sustainably transform their economic models.
🗣️ During these 2 days, we explored multiple avenues to better understand the motivations and expectations of business leaders and scientists. Group work sessions were fueled by case studies presented by Italian researchers, the Italian startup Microperi Blue Growth and a visit to the INM maritime innovation center, all fruitful collaborations between researchers and companies!
🤝 One example that stood out for us? Daniele Ventura and Edoardo Casoli, researchers at the University of Sapienza, worked on mitigating the impact of the installation of a pipeline in the Adriatic Sea, by minimizing its damage on coralligenous reefs, of high ecological value. The scientists’ expertise enabled the project to be carried out by relocating and transplanting coral blocks during deep dives.
🙏 Many thanks to Daniele Ventura and his team for hosting and organizing this trip. Many thanks also to our hosts during our visits: Microperi and the Institute of Marine Biology (INM).
🛠️ We look forward to continuing this adventure in Samos, Greece, at our next workshop, which will be dedicated to turning our ideas into a prototype!

Greece becomes the 1st European country to ban bottom trawling in its marine protected areas!
Greece becomes the 1st European country to ban bottom trawling in its marine protected areas!
At the Our Ocean world conference in Athens on April 17, 2024, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that trawling in marine protected areas will be banned by 2030. A historic step forward for the preservation of our marine ecosystems hitherto destroyed by this practice!
🚫🎣 Bottom trawling, a devastating practice for the ocean, will be banned from 2026 in Greece’s three marine national parks, before being extended to all protected areas.
But that’s not all! Two new marine national parks will also see the light of day in 2024. The first will cover 11% of Greek waters in the Ionian Sea, and the second 6% of territorial waters in the southern Aegean Sea.
Bravo for this superb initiative, which should set an example for the rest of the world!
