Second step in Rome for our European project!
Second step in Rome for our European project!
The “Sharing Ocean science for Sustainable business” project, coordinated by Pure Ocean, brings together numerous international partners from the worlds of scientific research and business. To stimulate innovation and collective intelligence, the group follows a proven creative approach: design thinking. This method punctuates our project with moments of remote work, and face-to-face reunions.
💭 After the problem definition stage in Marseille, it was the turn of the University of Rome-La Sapienza to welcome us for the ideation phase, a stage that involves formulating and bringing together the diversity of ideas and points of view in order to respond to the problem. As a reminder, the aim of the SOS project is to create lasting bridges between science and business, in order to sustainably transform their economic models.
🗣️ During these 2 days, we explored multiple avenues to better understand the motivations and expectations of business leaders and scientists. Group work sessions were fueled by case studies presented by Italian researchers, the Italian startup Microperi Blue Growth and a visit to the INM maritime innovation center, all fruitful collaborations between researchers and companies!
🤝 One example that stood out for us? Daniele Ventura and Edoardo Casoli, researchers at the University of Sapienza, worked on mitigating the impact of the installation of a pipeline in the Adriatic Sea, by minimizing its damage on coralligenous reefs, of high ecological value. The scientists’ expertise enabled the project to be carried out by relocating and transplanting coral blocks during deep dives.
🙏 Many thanks to Daniele Ventura and his team for hosting and organizing this trip. Many thanks also to our hosts during our visits: Microperi and the Institute of Marine Biology (INM).
🛠️ We look forward to continuing this adventure in Samos, Greece, at our next workshop, which will be dedicated to turning our ideas into a prototype!
Planet Earth or Planet Ocean?
Planet Earth or Planet Ocean?
70% of the Earth is covered by oceans, but one can’t live without the other. That’s why on this Earth Day, it’s just as important to take care of the ocean!
🎉 Today, we’re celebrating our beautiful planet. What can we do? Here are a few ideas for concrete action:
🤿 Discover the latest advances in ocean research to learn more and more about our blue lung.
✨ Do something for our ocean by supporting scientific research with Pure Ocean. Support the ocean today: https://www.pure-ocean.org/soutenez-nous/
♻ Organize a litter-picking action with La Goutte Bleue 💧 A seaweed-based bag to mobilize your employees around a simple gesture to care for the ocean.
Together, let’s make every day a day for the planet.
Greece becomes the 1st European country to ban bottom trawling in its marine protected areas!
Greece becomes the 1st European country to ban bottom trawling in its marine protected areas!
At the Our Ocean world conference in Athens on April 17, 2024, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that trawling in marine protected areas will be banned by 2030. A historic step forward for the preservation of our marine ecosystems hitherto destroyed by this practice!
🚫🎣 Bottom trawling, a devastating practice for the ocean, will be banned from 2026 in Greece’s three marine national parks, before being extended to all protected areas.
But that’s not all! Two new marine national parks will also see the light of day in 2024. The first will cover 11% of Greek waters in the Ionian Sea, and the second 6% of territorial waters in the southern Aegean Sea.
Bravo for this superb initiative, which should set an example for the rest of the world!
Ludovic Gerard has set sail for CAP Martinique
Ludovic Gerard set sail for CAP Martinique this Sunday from La Trinité-sur-Mer, proudly wearing the Pure Ocean colors!
⛵ We’re sending him all our support for this extraordinary adventure to Fort-de-France!
For almost twenty days at sea, Ludovic will have to juggle his sporting performance and the meticulous management of his resources during this 3800-mile crossing. A sporting challenge, but also a commitment to preserving our planet! 🌍
As a dedicated Pure Ocean ambassador, Ludovic embodies the spirit of our mission to protect the ocean. We’re proud to see him carry our values through every wave and every challenge. 💪
💙 Godspeed Ludovic, the Pure Ocean Lovers are all behind you!
160 new species identified in the abysses of Easter Island!
A breathtaking discovery: 160 new species identified in the abysses of Easter Island!
A recent expedition captured the world’s attention by documenting no less than 160 previously unknown species from the region, 50 of which are completely new to science. Among these wonders of nature, astonishing creatures such as a “flying spaghetti monster” and a luminescent abyssal “dragon fish” were observed for the first time in this area. These dazzling discoveries testify to the incredible biodiversity that thrives in the marine depths off Easter Island.
🔬This expedition, led by the Institut océanographique Schmidt, also revealed the existence of previously unexplored seamounts, each harboring their own unique ecosystem. The researchers underscore the crucial importance of protecting these diverse marine habitats in order to preserve marine biodiversity and deepen our understanding of ocean ecosystems.
The MECOPO project, winner of Pure Ocean in 2019, had already highlighted the high concentration of biological diversity on these seamounts, which are still largely unknown today.
Many wonders remain to be discovered in these abysses, a precious environment to be conserved, today threatened by deep sea mining.
Find out more about the expedition on video.
IFREMER signs the Barcelona Declaration on Biomolecular Ocean Observation to preserve marine biodiversity!
Live from Barcelona on the occasion of the second United Nations conference for the Decade of Ocean Sciences, a crucial update on the future of our blue planet.
France via IFREMER joins the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO), which calls for decisive action to sustainably support long-term, globally coordinated ocean data collection efforts.
🔬💡 Thanks to biomolecular analysis of DNA, RNA, proteins and small molecules, we are beginning to unlock the secrets of marine biodiversity. These techniques enable us to better understand and manage the major challenges facing our ocean, including climate change and biodiversity loss.
🌿The applications of these advances are vast, ranging from the management of marine protected areas to the prediction of diseases transmitted by marine organisms. By supporting these initiatives, we can anticipate dangers, protect endangered species and ensure the health of our marine ecosystems for future generations.
🪸 Pure Ocean has been supporting the Genesis project since 2023. This project is perfectly in line with the Barcelona Declaration, exploring new horizons in biomolecular observation of the ocean. Genesis aims to identify new bio-inspired compounds for tomorrow’s medicine and green chemistry, using revolutionary methods.
We paid a visit to Planète Mer!
We paid a visit to Planète Mer!
This association is behind the Yaf Keru Impact project 🪸 Mickaël Racine, the PhD student behind the project, is about to leave for Raja Ampat in Indonesia.
His objective? To study the environmental, economic and social impacts of restoring coral reefs destroyed by destructive fishing methods.
This visit was an opportunity to prepare the follow-up to the project, while getting to know this fabulous association which shares our vision and our objective: to act for marine preservation.
Thanks again for the warm welcome!
Another Pure Ocean Rendez-Vous!
Last Friday, we got together for a Pure Ocean Rendez-Vous!
