The ocean is on the front line of climate change. It has already absorbed 93% of the heat generated by our greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the equivalent of the energy released by the explosion of 7 Hiroshima bombs. Every second. 💥

👉 From marine heat waves to forced species migrations and coral bleaching, the impacts are multiple and alarming.

Climate change is not just a challenge: it’s an emergency. Limiting the use of fossil fuels is essential to preserve the fragile balance of marine ecosystems.

A look back at a year of collaboration between companies and scientists for the ocean

In 2024, we led SOS – Sharing Ocean Science. This ambitious project brought together scientists, businesses and NGOs around an ambitious mission: to work together to devise sustainable solutions to protect the ocean.

📌 Why this project?

The ocean, essential to our survival, is under serious threat from our activities: pollution, overfishing, global warming, etc. We are convinced that effective cooperation between the economic and scientific worlds is key to changing the game, and the world of science has a major role to play in transforming our models towards sustainable practices.

An unprecedented partnership and concrete advances

Over the course of several stages, we have brought our consortium together in each of our countries, to draw inspiration from our respective practices and work in collective intelligence ⤵️

🔹 Marseille: Inspiration and Launch – The aim was to understand the needs of companies and scientists, while defining the main areas of collaboration.

🔹 Rome: Ideation and Co-creation – We came up with innovative solutions to encourage cooperation between businesses and scientists.

🔹 Samos: Prototyping and Development – creating effective, scalable tools that enable meaningful long-term action while meeting the needs of each company.

🔹 Marseille – Ocean Impact Forum: Closing and Validation – A unifying event bringing together more than 100 decision-makers to share the results of the Ocean Impact Forum.

Your support in action: polar tests for the ocean!

Good progress for the Citizen into Science project! This summer, it was around Greenland that Christophe Van Dongen and the crew of the SY Cavalou put Oceanovox’s VOX-1 satellite box to the test. This polar expedition, a pioneering example of participatory science, initiated the collection of oceanographic data by citizens in this remote region.

Did you know that there are around 14,000 pleasure craft on the high seas every year, compared with just a hundred or so scientific campaigns? This is where Citizen into Science really comes into its own: bringing together yachtsmen and scientists to collect oceanographic data that is essential for preserving our oceans.

Supported since 2023, this Ifremer project is proving its worth. Thanks to the VOX-1 satellite box developed by OceanoVox, yachts can now automatically monitor weather conditions on the high seas, while being tracked in real time via nano-satellites. The VOX-2 box, currently under development, will enable surface water analysis (salinity, phytoplankton, temperature, etc.) to be added.

The results will be fed into the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and will help to create a ‘digital twin’ of the ocean, for a better understanding of its evolution.

Tests in polar environments are a key step towards exploring areas that are still inaccessible and gaining a better understanding of our ocean.

We met the MICROCEAN project leaders!

We met the MICROCEAN project leaders!

Yesterday we had the pleasure of visiting Pauline and Fanny, winners of our 2024 call for projects, in their laboratory at MIO (Institut Méditerranéen d’Océanologie).

Their mission is fascinating:

🧬 To understand the role of oceanic microorganism diversity in climate regulation.

🔦 To shed light on the crucial issues facing the deep ocean.

The ocean, our planet’s true blue lung, sequesters a portion of atmospheric CO2 through the “biological carbon pump.” This process, essential to climate regulation, depends on the richness and abundance of plankton, but how it works in the abyss remains largely unknown.

💡 Thanks to your support, Pauline, a PhD student in microbial oceanography is exploring this mystery by sequencing the DNA of deep-sea plankton, while Fanny, a scientific mediator and PhD student in environmental psychology is studying how society perceives and interacts with these oceanic microorganisms.

What a pleasure to have been able to get as close as possible to science by visiting their laboratory. A big thank you to Pauline and Fanny for this moment!

What better way to end the month of November than alongside 250 Pure Ocean Lovers!

Thursday November 28 was Ocean Night, a unique moment shared with our partners, sponsors, ambassadors, families and friends, to teach you more about the ocean, discover our actions and the progress of our projects.

🎥 We were honored to broadcast our first Pure Ocean documentary: HIDDEN SECRET. Directed by Clément Pourtal and Jérôme Brousse (The Blue Quest). This virtual voyage to the Aegean highlighted several Pure Ocean projects, made possible thanks to your support. Together we set out to discover the Mediterranean’s treasure trove: coralligenous. We were amazed to see such magnificent images!

Another highlight: our ambassador Ainhoa Leiceaga told us about her special bond with the ocean, on which she has surfed since childhood. It was an inspiring testimony that stirred the emotions – thank you, Ainhoa!

Thank you all, your smiles and support made this evening exceptional, and warmed our hearts. Until next year!

Global Plastics Treaty: a crucial step for our planet

This week, in Busan, South Korea, countries from around the world are meeting for the final stage of UN negotiations on a global treaty against plastic pollution.

🛍 Three days before Black Friday, the symbol of overconsumption, it’s essential to remember that this shopping frenzy directly feeds the massive production of plastic and the pollution that comes with it.

The aim of this treaty? To put an end to a crisis that threatens our health, biodiversity and climate. The world has never needed an ambitious agreement more.

📉 Why take action?

If nothing changes, plastic production and waste could triple by 2060, with devastating consequences, particularly in developing countries, where waste management systems are saturated.

Microplastics are now found everywhere: in our organs, our placentas, and even in our circulatory system, amplifying the risks to our health.

🌎 The stakes of the treaty :

A group of over 60 countries, including Rwanda and Norway, is calling for ambitious measures:

✅ Massive reduction in plastic production.

✅ Ban on single-use plastics and toxic chemicals.

✅ Global approach to the entire life cycle of plastics, from manufacture to end-of-life management.

⚡ A huge challenge:

Divergences persist, notably with plastic- and oil-producing countries. However, progress is possible if leaders like China and the United States make a firm commitment.

💬 Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, Norwegian Minister for International Development and co-chair of the High Ambition Coalition, sums up the urgency of the situation:

“We won’t have a perfect treaty, but it’s urgent to move forward. The world needs leadership and good news.”

We are at a historic turning point. Together, let us raise our voices of hope and action for a future without plastic pollution.

Hidden Secret: A documentary from The Blue Quest at Nuit de l'Océan

On Thursday November 28, at the Cinéma Le Chambord in Marseille, come and discover the new The Blue Quest documentary by former Pure Ocean member Clément Pourtal.

Hidden Secret reveals the hidden treasures of the Mediterranean and highlights the links between several scientific initiatives we support to protect the ocean.

At the heart of this exploration is the Aegean Coralligenous project, which, with the help of local fishermen, has mapped coralligenous reefs, a rare ecosystem teeming with precious biodiversity. These reefs have attracted the attention of Under the Pole, partners in the Genesis project, who are collecting samples there to explore the secrets of this ecosystem for tomorrow’s medicine. 🌿🔬

This Thursday, November 28, let’s dive into the Aegean Sea for an inspiring immersion in marine science and beauty! 🌟
