Space research receives more funding than ocean research
This is one of the striking observations shared by Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, the French President’s special envoy for the United Nations Ocean Conference, at the Nice Climate Summit. It’s high time we readjust our priorities to protect our blue planet!
Our director, Thomas, was present at this event alongside scientific, political and economic experts to lay the foundations for a global dialogue on the challenges and solutions for preserving the ocean.
The ocean is now classified as a “hot emergency” in international discussions. Good news?(Yes, but…) Unfortunately, this recognition is due to the growing urgency of rising sea levels, which directly threaten countries such as the Maldives and Indonesia.
The challenges are immense, and we hope that the Heads of State will take the measure of the situation with concrete actions at the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC ) in Nice in June 2025. We’ll be there to continue defending our blue lung!

Why is the water rising? Understanding sea-level rise and its impact
Rising sea levels are one of the most visible signs of climate change caused by our carbon emissions.
What accounts for this rapid rise?Two phenomena come together: firstly, the warming of the ocean causes it to expand, taking up more space. Secondly, melting glaciers and ice caps in Greenland and Antarctica are releasing billions of tonnes of water into the ocean. Each additional degree accelerates these processes, transforming our coasts at an alarming rate.
But what impact does this rising water have on us?
Some areas are already suffering the consequences. Indonesia, for example, is having to relocate its capital, Jakarta, because the weight of its infrastructure, in addition to rising water levels, is literally sinking the city. In the Pacific, islands like the Maldives are in danger of disappearing completely beneath the waves. And that’s not all! In France, almost 3 million people live on the coast, and according to estimates, cities like La Rochelle and Saint-Malo could also face major flooding in the decades to come.
The Secretary General of the United Nations recently pointed out that this threat could affect 900 million people living in low-lying coastal areas. The future of these communities depends on the decisions we take today to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit warming to 1.5°C.
In the face of this crisis, solidarity is essential. If we act together today, we can reverse the trend and protect the ocean for future generations.

Originally from Bordeaux, Piero has always had a passion for the ocean. Sailing in Charente-Maritime with his father, he developed a passion for the marine world at an early age. After studying in Lyon, he moved to Marseille, attracted by the city’s energy and direct proximity to the sea.
Drawing on his experience in the luxury hotel industry, he decided to move into the events sector, a field that really appeals to him. An adventurer at heart, Piero explored Southeast Asia backpacking for 7 months, an adventure that reinforced his commitment to preserving the ocean.
Today, as a work-study student at Pure Ocean, he is pursuing a master’s degree in event project management, determined to put his skills to work for the ocean.

Health of marine and human life: mechanisms closer than we think
Les scientifiques de l’Ifremer ont fait une avancée majeure en découvrant un mécanisme commun entre l’infection par l’herpèsvirus chez les huîtres et le développement du cancer chez les humains. 😱
Leur étude révèle que l’âge des huîtres influence la survie de leur progéniture, et que les jeunes huîtres issues de parents âgés sont plus sensibles à l’herpèsvirus OsHV-1, responsable de mortalités massives. Intriguant, cette sensibilité est liée à l’activation de la télomérase, une enzyme également impliquée dans les cancers humains. 🧬
💡 Cette découverte nous rappelle l’importance de comprendre les mécanismes biologiques sous-jacents à la santé marine. C’est précisément ce qu’étudie le projet Pure Ocean SYNSEN, lauréat 2024, qui va caractériser les conséquences de la plasticose, maladie liée à l’ingestion de microplastiques, sur l’ADN des oiseaux marins.
L’objectif de Synsen :modéliser les effets de l’ingestion de microplastiques sur le vieillissement cellulaire et les maladies neurodégénératives. 🩺
Une fois de plus, ces avancées scientifiques nous montrent l’importance de soutenir la recherche, pour comprendre et prévenir les enjeux liés à la santé des écosystèmes marins et humains.

Today marks the opening of the 16th Conference of the Parties dedicated to biodiversity (COP16) in Cali, Colombia. At a time when ecosystems are declining at an alarming rate, it is more urgent than ever to take concrete measures to protect biodiversity.
The decision-makers present have a huge responsibility: to act to preserve the richness of our planet. Our ocean, the Earth’s blue lung, plays a key role in our future. But without its abundant biodiversity, it is nothing. Remember that 90% of biodiversity is found in the ocean, and that 9 out of 10 species have yet to be discovered. It’s high time we understood the vital importance of this biodiversity and preserved it effectively.
